Holbrook Santa

I put up some wrong information on where to send checks for Holbrook Santa at first. Sorry about that. This is the correct information. Checks should be made out to “Holbrook Santa” and mailed directly to the Holbrook Cooperative Bank, 95 North Franklin Street OR made out to “Holbrook
Santa” and mailed to the Selectmen’s Office, 50 North Franklin Street. As a convenience to those who donate, the Selectmen’s office will make sure Holbrook Santa receives the checks.

Holbrook Santa provides presents for families that need a little help at xmas. If you are like me you think more about charity at this time of year. This is a chance to help out some kids in your hometown. Stop by the town hall or mail a donation in. I’ll make it easy on you. Pay me with a credit card and I’ll eat the credit card fees and give your entire payment to Holbrook Santa for you.

Union Street Lanes

Occasionally I’m going to be writing a review of a local business. I’ll relate my good and/or bad experiences with the local business community. Tonight I visited the Union Street Lanes bowling alley. (formerly Wright Brothers). It was a terrific cheap activity for the family. We got a sitter for the 3 week old and the wife and I took our 3yr old boy bowling. My wife watched and my son and I bowled on account of her having a c-section just a few weeks ago. My 3 year old beat me. True, he was taking 5 or 6 throws and I was taking 3. And he was using bumpers. But truth be told so was I, lol. We had a nice night out with the family for under $10. Where else can you do that? We are no different than anyone else right now. We are feeling the pinch of the economy. This was a family friendly inexpensive activity. The guy on staff was friendly and so were the other bowlers. The young couple next to us got a real kick out of my son. I got to keep my eye on a college football game going on as there was a flat screen tv showing a game. It was a wonderful night for all and I hope that the downturn in the economy actually helps out this local business. I encourage anyone looking for an inexpensive night out to visit the Union Street Lanes!

1 last post on the schools purchasing of computers

I’ve ranted about this a couple times before. Let me do it one more time and throw out some actual figures.

I don’t know the exact number, but buying 25 new computers like they just did for a classroom is roughly $20,000 at $800 a piece.

If I were in charge of IT in the town we would have purchased 3 $1500 computers. 25 new monitors at $120 ea. for $3000. 6 X550 virtualization kits from ncomputing for $2222. The total cost would have been $9722 to completely redo a computer lab. And the cost going forward to upgrade would have been just $4500 as you wouldn’t need the virtualization kits or monitors next time.

They could have saved over $10,000 on this one room of computers and over $15,000 next time. Not to mention the electicity savings from running 70% less computers. Just imagine what they could save if they virtualized all the computers as well as this one room. Hmmm, what could the schools do with an extra 10-15,000 bucks?

Breaking the law by hiding from us!

It has only been a few weeks since the Norfolk County DA’s office sent a letter to our Board of Selectmen requiring them to hold all future negotiations for the transfer station in open session. Tonight they plan to ignore the DA’s office and hold a meeting behind closed doors! There is an open Board of Selectmen meeting at 7pm before they do it. Please please go to this meeting and demand they not hide from us any longer! The following is from the DA’s letter:

The DA is requiring all further lease negotiations for the regional solid waste transfer station proposed for 3 Phillips Road to be conducted by the board of selectmen in open session.  No further executive session meetings will be allowed on the matter and all executive session minutes regarding the lease negotiations must be made public within 30 days.

The town recently hired attorney Michael Torres of Taunton as a consultant. Last week, Torres said that the next discussion of the lease should be held in executive session because it would involve “confidential information” that HELP considered too sensitive to be made public.

The reasons you can enter executive session to not include “confidential information”. The state’s public records law makes no mention of “confidential information” as grounds for an exemption from open meeting requirements. It also stipulates that all exemptions are to be “narrowly construed.”

I’m sure Kathy Connolly doesn’t believe this a good idea. And I’m surprised to read that Richard McGaughey agrees as well.

The first few discussions of strategy qualified as exempt, he said, because then it would have been “naive” for the board to place all its cards on the table.

“Now we know what they want, and we know what we want,” he said. “So let’s negotiate in public.”

Lets get to that meeting tonight and get one of the other 3 to see the light so they can’t hide behind closed doors on this. IT DOES NOT QUALIFY as a reason to go into executive session. They are breaking the law!!!

A milestone for our country.

Barack Obama was elected today as the 44th President of the Unites States. For the first time in our history when little kids are told in school that anyone can grow up to be President it will be true. The fact that America has elected a black man who was raised by a single mother and his grandparents simply amazes me. Today you can truthfully look your child in the face and tell them with hard work and determination anything is possible. There is no longer a ceiling to the American Dream.

This election is to me the chance to reverse the travesty of a Presidency that never should have been. We have won the popular vote in four of the five last elections, and we now win a real majority. This country should never have been taken as far right as Dick Cheney and George Bush took it, to an extreme representing a fringe of committed right wing zealots.

In only two decades of adult life Obama has worked as a community organizer, a constitutional law professor and a legislator at both the state and national level. He has been the president of the Harvard Law Review, the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention and the author of two best-selling books. He has shown political courage, personal fortitude and impressive intellect. Obama offers something no other politician today does: the ability to inspire citizens across the country to work with him to address our greatest challenges. I am struck by Barack Obama’s amazing talent to transcend everyday politics and inspire in a way that no leader has done in my lifetime. He has the mark of a true leader.

It’s Election Day! Get out and vote!

Get out and vote. Call your friends and get them to vote. Especially if they live in other states. Most of our results are a forgone conclusion, but if you know someone in NH call em up. Most of the year I’ve made it well known that I’m for Obama. But today, I don’t care who you are voting for. I just think it is important to vote. It’s one of the most important things we do as Americans. (But I’d really like it if you voted Democrat, lol) The polls in MA are open from 7am to 8pm.

Terrific Halloween!!!

Thanks so much to everyone in the Grove! We live right at the entrance to the grove so it is where I took my 3yr old trick or treating last night for the first time in his life. What a terrific time we had. So many of the adults handing out candy actually dressed up to hand out candy. People were hanging out on their porches and in their driveways handing out candy and Halloween cheer. I know that the great weather had something to do with it, but I’d just like to express how much I appreciated the effort and good nature of everyone in the neighborhood last night. It was like a giant block party and my son loved every second of it.
